"New" naval police base in Ulcinj

The Ministry of Interior, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro marked the completion of works on the adaptation and equipping of the Sveti Nikola Border Police Naval Base in Ulcinj, which was officially handed over for use to the Ministry of Interior. The value of the works is 700.000 euros.

The work was carried out within the framework of the “European Union Support for Migration and Border Management in Montenegro” programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by IOM Montenegro. The adaptation is part of the activities aimed at strengthening Montenegro's capacities in the field of integrated border management and surveillance of the blue border on the Adriatic Sea and the Bojana River.

The project included the complete renovation and modernization of the main administrative and operational building, removal of the outdated structure, renovation of auxiliary facilities, construction of access and internal roads, landscaping, as well as installation of new electrical, security and communication systems.

The handover of the facility is part of a broader program that IOM is implementing in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, which includes improving infrastructure, modernizing information systems, developing procedures, and aligning with European Union requirements, including the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

According to the statement, the modernized base should contribute to better conditions for the operational work of the border police, coordination of activities and surveillance of the state border. The importance of strengthening human resources in the security sector was also highlighted, through a public call for the recruitment of new police officers, of which 250 are planned to be assigned to the Border Police Sector.

Representatives of the European Union stated that the project contributes to fulfilling the obligations under Chapter 24, which covers the areas of migration, border management and the fight against cross-border crime - effective border management implies adequate infrastructure, equipment, operational capacities and trained personnel.
