Strong international cooperation is key to an effective response to modern security threats, said Minister of Interior Danilo Šaranović at the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS).

As announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), Šaranović and the Director of the Police Administration Lazar Šćepanović participated in the summit held at the UN headquarters in New York.

Šaranović, during a session dedicated to strengthening international cooperation in order to overcome transnational challenges, said that Montenegro remains a reliable partner of the international community in joint efforts aimed at preserving peace, security and the rule of law.

Addressing the summit participants, he emphasized that contemporary security challenges know no borders and that they therefore require a decisive and coordinated response from states and international organizations.

"Organized crime, human trafficking, arms smuggling, cybercrime and other transnational threats can only be effectively combated through strong international police cooperation, timely exchange of operational information, joint investigations and mutual trust between partner services," said Šaranović.

He emphasized that Montenegro recognizes international police cooperation as one of the key pillars of the modern security system, which is why it continuously contributes to the work of international missions and initiatives, confirming its commitment to the joint fight against all forms of organized and transnational crime.

Speaking about the role of the United Nations Police (UNPOL), Šaranović recalled that Montenegrin police officers have been contributing to UN peacekeeping operations for years, gaining valuable experience in managing crisis situations, protecting human rights, and strengthening trust between institutions and citizens.

"Montenegro will remain a strong advocate of multilateralism and international cooperation, convinced that only through joint action can security, stability and the rule of law be preserved," emphasized Šaranović.

He welcomed the work of the UN Inter-Agency Working Group on Police Affairs, assessing that strengthening coordination within the UN system is an important prerequisite for a more effective response to continuously changing security challenges, with a special focus on the protection of vulnerable categories of the population.

"He also emphasized that Montenegro remains committed to the principles of the UN Secretary-General's Joint Agenda, through building responsible institutions, improving international cooperation and consistently strengthening the rule of law," the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.

Šaranović said that Montenegro will continue to actively contribute to this important global platform for exchanging experiences, improving police cooperation, and jointly creating responses to today's most complex security challenges.
