Montenegrin citizen arrested in Italy after attempted fraud

A Montenegrin citizen was arrested yesterday in the Italian city of Vicenza along with a citizen of that country, after they allegedly tried to defraud an elderly woman by falsely posing as police officers.

Jewelry was found on them, which was determined to have come from another fraud, committed shortly before that to the detriment of another old woman.

Italian police announced that multiple fraud attempts were reported to police in Vicenza yesterday morning, and that a call was received at around 1:40 p.m. reporting that a fraud attempt was in progress.

"The police officers immediately headed to the reported address, where they spotted two people. The first man, of foreign origin, was found leaving the house from which screams could be heard, while the second man was waiting for his accomplice in the car. Both were immediately stopped and checked. A subsequent check determined that the attempted fraud, carried out using the 'fake carabinieri' method, failed because the woman realized that it was a scam and forced the perpetrator to flee. A search of the suspects and the vehicle found several pieces of gold jewelry. It was later determined that the jewelry came from another fraud, committed shortly before that to the detriment of an 88-year-old woman," the statement reads.

After consultations with the prosecutor in Vicenza, the suspects were arrested and taken to the local prison, where they will await a hearing.
