Polestar opened orders for a new SUV version of the Model 4 on September 2nd, and the most important news is not just a different body shape. The Swedish electric brand, technologically and ownership-wise linked to the Geely group, is positioning the more practical version below the coupe model in terms of price, with more space and a classic rear window. It's a direct response to customers who found the original Polestar 4 attractive but too unusual or impractical.
The original coupe-SUV ditched the rear window in favor of a camera and digital interior mirror. The new Polestar 4 SUV has a more upright rear end and a conventional rear view, while a digital rear view mirror remains an option. The trunk holds 530 liters up to the top of the backrest, 655 liters when loaded to the roof and 1.665 liters with the seats folded, with an additional 15 liters of space at the front. The body is 4.840 mm long, so this is a large family electric car, not a compact city SUV.
Customers can choose between rear-wheel drive with a single 272 hp motor or all-wheel drive with two motors and 544 hp. The weaker version reaches 100 km/h in 7,3 seconds, and the more powerful in 3,9 seconds. The target WLTP range is up to 630 km with rear-wheel drive and up to 600 km with two motors. These are preliminary homologation values; the real range will depend on speed, temperature, wheels, load and driving style.
Both versions use a 100 kWh battery and a 400-volt architecture. The maximum DC charging power is 200 kW, and the manufacturer states that it takes approximately 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent. This is usable for longer trips, but in the premium class it is not a leading result: some newer rivals with an 800-volt architecture can receive significantly more power. Therefore, the buyer should not only look at the declared range, but also at the charging curve and the behavior of the battery in winter.
In the UK, the starting price is £54.750, £2.000 less than the equivalent Polestar 4 Coupé. Autocar places it alongside the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric, while natural rivals include the Audi Q6 e-tron, Volvo EX60 and Tesla Model Y. Polestar reckons the combination of more space and lower price will appeal to a wider audience than the more stylish coupe.
What we know and what we don't know yet: Orders are open in most Polestar markets, and production is in Busan, South Korea. No official price, delivery date, local homologation or service network have been confirmed for Montenegro and the region. The stated WLTP range is a target that may still depend on final certification and specific configuration.
Before buying such a car, you should check where the service is done, how long the warranty on the vehicle and battery lasts, whether replacement parts are available, how software upgrades work, and which fast charging networks support simple payment. It is especially important to look for information on the useful capacity of the battery and real-world charging times in cold conditions, and not rely only on the maximum 200 kW.
The Polestar 4 SUV is important because it shows that electric carmakers are starting to adjust their design experiments as customers demand more everyday practicality. The rear window, more space and lower price may sound less spectacular than record-breaking acceleration, but these are the changes that could bring more real buyers to a large electric SUV.
