The Regional Union of Theaters (RUTA), of which the Podgorica City Theater is a member, was formed at the end of the previous week in Belgrade. In addition to the City Theatre, the Union consists of five other theater houses from the former Yugoslavia: Belgrade Drama Theater (BDP), Drama Theater Skopje, Kameni Teatar 55 from Sarajevo, Mestno gledališče Ljubljana and Ulysses Theater from Zagreb.
With the formation of RUTA, a protocol on business cooperation between the aforementioned theaters was signed, and the signatories are: the artistic director of the City Theater, Dušan Kovačević, Sofija Kunovska from the Drama Theater in Skopje, Vedran Fajković from Chamber Theater 55 in Sarajevo, Barbara Hing Samobor from the Municipal Theater, Duško Ljuština from Ulysses Theater and Jug Radivojević from BDP.
"The goals of the Union are to institutionalize cooperation between these theaters, to allow the audience to see representative plays from the region and to do large co-productions. In this context, one of the initial steps will be the organization of the first RUTA festival, which will be held from December 1 to 6 in BDP", the announcement states.
The director of the City Theater pointed out that this cooperation "will enable healthy competition, and at the same time make the ex-YU theater scene better and the audience more satisfied."
The director of the Belgrade Theater and the creator of the Union, Jug Radivojević, said that since its inception, BDP had a tendency to be innovative and to keep up with the times. He added that RUTA is a good abbreviation, because theaters from the region have a common path, direction and journey.
"I would like to thank my colleagues who quickly recognized an excellent idea. The creation of the Union is an event of great importance for the culture of the entire region," said Radivojević.
Fajković from Chamber Theater 55 added that this idea of cooperation is noble, "because artists know no boundaries in their heads."
