Matija and Katarina Blagojević are new names on the Montenegrin pop scene, which they stepped onto with their debut song "Empty City", which is accompanied by a corresponding video that has already collected almost a hundred thousand views in five days.
Young musicians with their track, which is characterized by modern production, announce the arrival of a new generation on the domestic scene, which looks up to mainstream performers from the West in the domain of pop, r'n'b, and even rap, with elements of electronic music.
For this song, Matija Blagojević worked on the music and lyrics, and Filip Miovčić mixed and mastered it in Matija's studio Metro Digital in Podgorica. The video can be viewed on the YouTube service under the title "Matija x Katarina - Empty city", and as the name suggests, it shows the aforementioned brother and sister driving through the empty streets of Podgorica.
"The song was created in my studio, which for me is the center of all creative processes. Inspiration came from songs by other artists as well as events from my life. The video was shot in several locations in Podgorica, directed by Dino Ganić and Vasilij Marković. I would characterize the sound as something new in these areas", said Matija Blagojević for "Vijesti".
He explained which artists inspired him and why it is important for him to control the entire creative process.
"The most inspiring artists for me are The Weeknd, 6lack, A$AP Rocky and Lana Del Rey. I believe that every performer is obliged to play the role of a producer and should not leave any creative aspect to chance", said Blagojević.
He announced that this is only the first in a series of tracks that he and his sister, together or independently, plan to release soon.
"In the future, synthwave admixtures will be reduced to a minimum, while the influence of evolved hip-hop, which has been mainstream for a few years, both on the regional and world stage, will be strengthened. I plan to continue working with my sister, although I will perform the next few tracks, which I will publish, by myself", said the 21-year-old student of economics, while his four-years-younger sister decided to study to become an architect.
Blagojević revealed in more detail what can be expected from him in the upcoming singles he plans to release.
"The next two songs will keep the dark moment filled with love lyrics, but there will be a different choice of instruments. I plan to, at least in the beginning, release a video and a song about every six weeks because I think that continuous work is a barrier that has destroyed many talented artists. It's still early for me to think about a possible album, but certainly one of the plans is for it to happen when the moment is right," said the musician from Podgorica.
Although he is extremely young, Blagojević started his career with high ambitions, so he started the production and publishing house Metro Digital, which will bring the modern sound that he thinks it lacks to the domestic scene.
“Metro Digital is an emerging, fastest growing label that aims to work with modern sound and artists who can deliver it the right way. I believe that our scene is trotting behind world trends, relying on a traditional and outdated approach in all steps of production, with few exceptions," the musician opined.
He still did not want to reveal the names of the performers gathered under the Metro Digital label, but he said that it will be known to the public soon and added what can be expected from them.
“It will deal with all the current mainstream genres. I think that the development and availability of technology have enabled many people to express themselves more easily, so in addition to all the aids for learning how to use them, all you need is will, work and talent," he pointed out.
