"There is general agreement that the expressive organization of pictorial elements makes it possible Matis's pictures and drawings to breathe. This essay examines the metaphor of pictorial respiration, which mainly rests on the formal level, and exposes Matisse's approach as a specific pneumatic conception in which the breathing process of the painting is intimately connected to the breathing processes of the artist and the observer. To describe the procedures by which the artist invents a special type of chromatic-linear construction whose action leads the artist and the viewer to breathe the painting, the author focuses on three terms that he considers crucial for defining Matisse's pneumatic painting: force, décorativité and rapport. Through their detailed analysis, this book tries to interpret Matisse's statements more precisely, to reexamine generally accepted theoretical and historical art claims, to present new insights, in order to point out the essential change that Matisse's works introduce in painting: the transition from a distant cognitive observation to an affective, breathing relationship with a work of art", is a short summary of the work.
