The manuscript of the script for the film "Contempt" by Jean-Luc Godard, a cult achievement, which belonged to the former actress Brigitte Bardot, was sold at an auction in Paris for more than 300.000 euros, the Christie house announced.
The manuscript, originally estimated at between 120.000 and 180.000 euros, was sold on Thursday evening for exactly 302.400 euros, the auction house said, which did not disclose who the buyer was.
The manuscript consists of 59 pages of script written in blue ink as well as 24 typed pages, many of which have been corrected by the hand of the French-Swiss filmmaker.
On those pages, there are also some notes from the actors in the film, Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli.
"It is the complete manuscript of the first version of the film, without the nude scenes imposed on the director by the American film production," the auction house stated, adding that it is "the only known handwritten version of the script" of the 1963 film.
The screenplay belonged to Brigitte Bardot before she sold it to a friend, photographer Gislain Disard.
The director, one of the founders of the French New Wave, has directed, among others, the films "To the Last Breath", "Live Your Life", "The Peculiar Gang", "Crazy Pierrot", "Alphaville", "Masculine - Feminine" and "Film Socialism".
Godar (91) died on September 13. He requested assisted suicide or euthanasia due to several pathologies. This practice is legal in Switzerland and is approved by a special medical commission.
