Prof. reminded that "Mountain Wreath" is an epoch-making work, highly ambiguous, with many different levels and often counter-typical voices, but even today the subject of interpretation and analysis at various levels and spheres. Ph.D Siniša Jelišić at yesterday's forum held at the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU), on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the publication of the work Petar II Petrović Njegoš.
With an expert forum, CANU organized a tribute on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the printing of the "Mountain Wreath" by Petar II Petrović Njegoš, at which the following speakers spoke: Nenad Vuković, ambassador of the Republic of Armenia in Montenegro, dr Ashot Hovakimian and associate member of CANU prof. Ph.D Jelusic.
"A work that is real, he observes Jovan Deretic, an encyclopedia of Montenegrin life and Montenegrin history, but also a literary work of the deepest philosophical, religious and ethnic significance. It is, therefore, about a song with the deepest metaphysical meaning, which is the foundation of the concept of freedom, which cannot exist without the demand to 'put your foot on the neck of tyranny, bring it to a better knowledge of rights, that is the most sacred human duty'. Therefore, this imperative requires general, individual and social engagement in the achievement of a free personality and a just society. This gives the 'Mountain Wreath' a completely epoch-making meaning, and its creator a place among the greatest that European culture has gathered in the centuries of its long existence until today," concluded Jelušić.
Academician Vuković spoke about the history of relations and the intertwined paths of Armenia and Montenegro, mostly through the character and work of Petar II Petrović Njegoš.
A particularly important role is played by the monastery of the Armenian Catholic order in Vienna, where Njegoš, explained Ambassador Hovakimian, despite Austrian censorship, printed his works, including "Mountain Wreath".
Originally, in June 1833, during his journey to St. Petersburg, Njegoš stayed in Armenia, where he was impressed by Armenian monks wearing a mantle similar to his own. Austria's censorship aimed at Njegoš was reflected in the fact that it was not allowed to print some of Njegoš's works whose subject matter was "directed against the Turks, with whom Austria had friendly relations at the time".
"However, during his second visit to Vienna, Njegoš with help Vuk Karadzic prints his manuscripts in an Armenian monastery. At the end of 1846, after Njegoš's subsequent arrival in Vienna, Vuk manages to convince him to print "Mountain Wreath" in the printing press of the Armenian monastery. The book was printed in the spring of 1847, and in 1876, 'Mountain Wreath' saw its second edition in this same printing house. Four books by Njegoš were printed there. That is why this event and the commemoration of 175 years is an important event for the history, not only of Montenegro, but also of Armenia and Montenegrin and Armenian friendly relations", said Hovakimian.
He also pointed out that recently, about a month ago, in Armenia as a whole, Njegos's "Night of the Centuries" was published in the Armenian language. He ended his presentation by congratulating Njegos Day, the Montenegrin cultural holiday, which is celebrated on Sunday, November 13.
