The drama program of the 37th Grad Theater festival continued last night on the stage between the churches with the performance of the play "Enemy of the People" by the Macedonian National Theater from Skopje.
The play was based on Henrik Ibsen's play of the same name, dramatized by Tamara Baračkov, translated by Maja Trojanovska Ivanovska, and directed by Nina Nikolić.
The performance is part of the international project "Paths of Heroes", financially supported by the European Union's "Creative Europe" program, which brought together seven partner organizations around a common idea and a globally pressing issue, namely environmental protection.
Therefore, the play by the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen, created as far back as 1882, served as a suitable classic of dramatic literature whose relevance today is more than obvious.
The drama thematizes the environmental issue, but also the issue of ostracizing an individual from society because of his irrefutable moral values.
Namely, in a spa whose residents live off tourism, Dr. Stokman discovers that the water that was believed to be medicinal is actually infected and threatens to seriously harm everyone who uses it for drinking and bathing.
Wanting to announce it to everyone, the doctor comes into conflict with the mayor, who is also his own brother, but also with other representatives of power from his immediate environment.
At the end of the news, they broadcast an official letter that the doubt about the quality of the water is a lie and an attempt to change the government, and the doctor is forced to leave the country where he was born and lived with his family, wife and three daughters.
Through Stokman's conflict with the authorities and the media, a critique of conformity, self-interest, but also manipulation, as well as journalistic ethics, is presented.
Nikola Ristanovski, who portrays the character of Dr. Stockman, said after the performance on the stage between the churches that it was the first Ibsen play in which he acted.
“This is my first Ibsen and it was really a surprise because I knew him as well as I can know him considering I haven't played him. Playing actually understands the organism of the writer. I confirmed that it is a very serious matter, he is very close to Chekhov in that matter, in whose plays I played almost all. Ibsen is a serious writer who is not often worked with, and maybe it is difficult to work with him", said Ristanovski and added that he thought a lot about the theme of the play and realized that he was doing too little.
"At the same time, I am aware of the problem, but it is human nature to put some very important things last and deal with some less important things until seemingly unimportant things run over them like a herd of elephants. It is the same with the environment, although it is really only one of the layers in Ibsen. It is incredible that eco-awareness was written about 150 years ago, we only recently realized in this area that we should recycle. That's about how late we are. I'm not saying that it's an ideal world, but they solved these elementary things some time ago," emphasized Ristanovski.
The play premiered in May of last year and in a short period of time it was a great success and received several recognitions and awards, both on the domestic and international festival stage. The author's team consists of Višnja Vujović, scenographer, Ivana Karanfilovska-Ugurovska, costume designer, Jorgos Dusos, composer, Karis Peklivandis, choreographer, and Kris Jeger, lighting designer, while Nikola Ristanovski, Zvezdana Angelovska, Darja Rizova, Jana Veljanovska, Lana Grpčevski play in the play. , Blagoj Veselinov, Petre Arsovski, Saška Dimitrovska, Aleksandar Mihajlovski, Nino Levi and Martin Đorgoski.
