At the 5th session of the jury for awarding the Njegoš Award, with four votes in favor, the award went to the writer Dubravka Ugrešić, the Ministry of Culture and Media (MKM) announced.
"Three out of seven members of the jury voted for the Slovenian writer Drago Jančar, who was in the last round of voting. David Albahari, Dubravka Ugrešić and Drago Jančar were shortlisted for the award," the announcement states.
As added in the announcement, the president of the jury, Nedžad Ibrahimović, said on that occasion that some awards are important to the writer, and some awards are important to society and culture.
"Due to her literary oeuvre, ethical attitude, integrity and social engagement, the award given to Dubravka Ugrešić belongs to this second category," he said.
Dubravka Ugrešić is, the Ministry stated. read and translated Croatian/Yugoslavian writer whose work will be dealt with by generations to come".
They stated that she is one of the fiercest critics of the Balkan patriarchy and the nationalisms that arose from it.
She taught at prestigious American and European universities.
Jury member Saša Ćirić from Serbia said that he voted for the work of Dubravka Ugrešić because of "its literary-historical relevance and duration, poetic experiment, combination of essay and narrative, as well as critical orientation, i.e. its influence on the Balkan and international literary scene".
According to the jury's opinion, as stated in the announcement, Dubravka Ugrešić is the most brilliant voice of post/Yugoslav prose literature and essay writing, a writer of exceptional imagination, stylistic self-awareness and originality, whose oeuvre undoubtedly belongs to the pinnacle of world and European literature of the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century.
"Like a rare author from a wider area, she managed to find the best literary forms for her themes and preoccupations and in an authentic and original/amazing way, to write about various aporias and anomalies of our spacetime. Ugrešić is a master of irony, persiflage, puns and witticisms; a lucid observer of social movements who deftly combines different stylistic registers and seduces her readers with an exceptional literary personality and the art of mimicry. Ugrešić managed to recognize numerous current social transformations, contemporary phenomena and changes of time that are often invisible to us, as their contemporaries, always one step ahead of the others Her literary oeuvre as well as her views on society, the aesthetic and ethical imperatives that guided her in life and writing, as well as her unbreakable artistic backbone constitute a precious heritage for all generations of writers and readers in the post-Yugoslav space, the generations that want to be here. and now to create a better future," the announcement reads.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Media of Montenegro, the award will be received by representatives of the foundation, which was established at the request of Dubravka Ugrešić with the primary goal of managing her literary legacy.
