Nikšić: Organized promotion of Janko Jelic's book "Brothers at the Bonfire"

In Nikšić, organized by the association "Sveti Đorđe", the promotion of Janko Jelic's new book "Brothers on the bonfire", published by the publishing house "Cuvari", was organized. It is a book that contains 17 "boy stories", as the working title of the mentioned edition read.

"The collection is made up of stories told by unnamed narrators who address the reader in the first person and appear in the role of the main characters. I must not say a hero or a hero, because these characters are not very representative. Jelić's narrative characters imitate lower characters, as defined by Aristotle in his poetics. Janko Jelić gives their stories tragicomic twists that resolve in the direction of a common natural learning that consists in humanity. If this bundle of stories has a thread that connects them, then it is precisely in the secret of humanity that breaks through despite the human mistakes and grotesqueness of Jelic's characters and despite the life circumstances that frustrate that humanity," said prof. Dr. Dušan Krcunović.

According to him, the characters' attempt to find a way out of those grotesque situations is an act of humanity.

"A rich inventory of archaic and forgotten words, an inexhaustible sense of humor, the skill of what in literary theory is called prosopopeia, the ability of the author to allow the characters to speak for themselves and to portray themselves, as well as the unexpected turns that these stories take, these are key elements by which Janko Jelić is recognized as a great contemporary Serbian writer," Krcunović pointed out.

The publishing house "Cuvari" has so far published three of Jelić's books - the aforementioned "Brothers on the pyre", as well as the first novel "Notebook from the Transfiguration" and the second edition of the book "Golden man - stories in front of the village store", which won the "Radoje" award Domanović" for the best book of satire published in the Serbian language in 2017.

"His books are real treats for our publishing house, first of all because of the uniqueness of his writing, and certainly his personality, and then also because of our need to discover local pearls, because we mainly deal with translated literature," said publisher Dejan Pavlović.

Archpriest Mirko Vuković pointed out that we tell the stories in the book "Brothers on the pyre" every day, that it is a large work spread over a few pages, and that Jelić makes an excellent observation that "solitude is neither there nor here, but always in between".

The president of the "Sveti Đorđe" society, Velimir Kasalica, introduced the audience to the biography of the writer who writes prose, poetry, plays and essays.

The author thanked the speakers, the publisher, the audience, as well as his family and friends, and the Society that organized the promotion of his new book.

"This language and this heritage that manifests itself a little and permeates through my creativity transcends both me as an author and all of us, and we are obliged to remain faithful to it and be worthy of it, so that we pass it on to our children and that they reproduce it in another way. Let's survive as a name and as a language, as what is good," said Jelić and read a part from the story "Potonje pijanstvo".
