The war never ends and some new ones appear again and again in increasingly difficult frameworks, and maybe it is the right moment to talk about this topic in the theater, as a place of courage and freedom, said the actress and director of the Sarajevo War Theater SARTR Maja Salkic after the performance of the play "Othello" in Podgorica, at the closing of the festival of the Regional Union of Theaters Ruta.
The fourth Podgorica edition of Ruta closed with a piece co-produced by the Ulysses Theater and SARTR, which William Shakespeare, directed Oksana Dmitrieva from Ukraine.
"The way we came to cooperate with Oksana was the initiative of the Ulysses Theater and Lenke Udovicki who a year earlier had a workshop with artists from Ukraine who came to Brijuna and worked through music and various acting workshops where they met and came up with the idea of making a joint performance", explained Salkić.
"Othello" is one of the most terrible and at the same time the most tender tragedies of Shakespeare.
"Envy, jealousy, trust, betrayal and, most importantly, love, are the focus of the story. This important theme explores the context of a war veteran who returns home a hero after looking into the darkest depths of the human soul. How easy it is to break a hero, how easy it is to manipulate him. What irreparable tragic consequences will those manipulations have, that fatal 'peaceful' game... Those who survived the war, may not survive the peace", they stated in a statement from the City Theatre.
The play explores the context of a war veteran who returns home a hero, after looking into the darkest depths of the human soul.
"War brings the community, but also the individual, to the realization that there are only two categories - black and white, friend or foe, good or bad. Shades of gray disappear. On the battlefield, all the body's resources are focused on survival, so the condition for survival is that a person lives and reacts according to the most basic instincts, rejecting complex multi-layered social rules. But one day the warriors return home and have to adapt to social rules all over again. How easy it is to break a hero, how easy it is to manipulate him. What irreparable tragic consequences will those manipulations have, that fatal 'peaceful' game... Those who survived the war, may not survive the peace", the description reads.
After the performance, a round table was held during which the playwright spoke with the actors of the play Dragana Tripković.
"Obviously, there is a reason why anti-war plays are made and why those plays are current, and it is a privilege that we succeeded in the process and play this play around the region. We had the need, as artists from a city where artists came in the middle of the war who were ready to express solidarity and risk their lives and make Golgotha easier for us, to return the favor 30 years later to someone who is in that situation," said the actor. Ana Marija Brđanović she pointed out that it was the first time that she came from Rijeka, where she works and lives, to Sarajevo among unknown people who welcomed her as family. She fell in love with Sarajevo and with the people she wants to meet again and collaborate with.
