Jane Fonda honored for lifetime achievement
Actress Jane Fonda, a two-time Oscar winner and activist with a career spanning six decades, was honored with a lifetime achievement award.
"Your enthusiasm makes this feel less like the twilight of my life and more like, 'Come on, girl, rock it because I'm not done,'" Fonda said.
She called on Hollywood to deal with difficult times with empathy.
"What we, actors, create is empathy. Our job is to understand another human being so deeply that we can touch their souls," she said in her speech to the Fund.
"And make no mistake, empathy is not a weakness, it just means you care about other people."
Her career spans film, television and theatre, ranging from "Detective Klute," "Coming Home," "9 to 5," "Monster-Law," "Grace & Frankie," "Book Club" and "80 for Brady," for which the 87-year-old actress has won two Oscars, an Emmy and seven Golden Globe nominations - as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's De FIlle Award.
"I've had a really weird career - completely unstrategic," Fonda said. "I retired for 15 years and came back at 65, which is unusual. I made one of my most successful films in the '80s, and I'll probably do my own stunts in an action movie in the '90s."
Fonda, who describes herself as a late bloomer, said she became an actress because she grew up in the 1940s and 1950s when "women weren't supposed to have opinions and get angry."
"Acting has given me the opportunity to play angry, willful women, which, you know, is a lot for me," she said.
In addition to her achievements on stage and screen, Fonda is known for her activism for civil rights, gender equality, and the anti-war movement.
She has also been vocal in raising awareness about the global climate crisis.
In October 2019, Fonda was arrested five times, and she brought other famous friends with her, such as Teda Denson, Ketrin Kiner i Rozane Arket to protest in front of the Capitol in Washington to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
The Fund is the 60th recipient, and in previous years the award was also received by Barbra Streisand, Sally Field i Helen Mirren.
