Nikšić will be the European Capital of Culture in 2030. It was announced at a ceremony held today in Brussels that Nikšić has won the prestigious title.
The decision was announced at the House of European History in Brussels, after the final presentation of Nikšić's candidacy before a panel of the European Commission was held yesterday.
"The team representing our city left a strong impression. The presentation was assessed as very serious and well-prepared, and after the presentation, two rounds of detailed questions followed, which is rarely practiced in such processes," it was announced yesterday on the official Nikšić - European Capital of Culture 2030 website.
Nikšić won this title in the final duel with the Ukrainian city of Lviv, in the category of cities from countries outside the European Union.
Jury President Hrvoje Laurenta He pointed out that both cities can be proud of what they have achieved, but only one can take home the prestigious title, and that is Nikšić.
This is an exceptional recognition for Montenegrin culture, creativity and the European values we inherit, but also local strength, assessed the Minister of Culture and Media. Tamara Vujović in a statement on the occasion of the proclamation of Nikšić as the European Capital of Culture 2030.
She congratulated the citizens of Nikšić and all of Montenegro on the historic success of Nikšić's selection as the European Capital of Culture in 2030. "Today, Nikšić has become a symbol of success, unity and cultural maturity of Montenegro. The title of European Capital of Culture confirms that our cultural potential, identity and creativity can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in Europe. This is recognition of the work and vision of all who believed that culture can be the foundation of development, dialogue and social cohesion," said Vujović.
President of Nikšić Municipality Marko Kovačević, He said in a media address that this is a big day for the city.
"We have managed to dream a big dream, and now we are going to make it a reality in the next five years and make Nikšić the capital of Europe in 2030," he said.
The Minister emphasized that the Ministry of Culture and Media, together with local government and partners from the country and abroad, will work dedicatedly on the implementation of the program that will position Nikšić as a European center of contemporary creativity, cultural cooperation and innovation. "This title brings new energy and an obligation to show that Montenegro has the strength to connect people through culture, encourage development and build bridges to the future. In 2030, Nikšić will be a city of art, ideas and encounters," Vujović emphasized.
The European Capital of Culture is an initiative of the European Union (EU) that was launched in 1985 and represents one of the most ambitious cultural projects in Europe. It is the most important initiative of the European Commission when it comes to culture and dates back to 1985 when the Minister of Culture of Greece Melina Mercuri established the title, or rather the initiative. During the first ten years, the title was mainly held by cities that already had the status of cultural centres, so the European Commission decided that the title could contribute more to cities that were not capitals... In the meantime, categories were also created for ECOC cities from countries outside the European Union and countries acceding to the Union.
Nikšić is the European Capital of Culture in 2030 in the non-EU category. In the competition of cities from the European Union, Leuven from Belgium was selected, while the choice between the two Cypriot cities of Levesos and Larnaca is also pending.
