Delegation of Nikšić, project manager Nikšić 2030-European Capital of Culture Mato Uljarevic, and manager of the "Nikšić 2030" office Nemanja Popovic, attended the grand opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture Oulu 2026 in Finland.
Thus, Oulu officially began the implementation of the program of one of the most significant European cultural initiatives.
"As part of the official program, the Nikšić delegation met with Piom Ahrenkilde Hansen, Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, as well as with numerous European officials and representatives of cities and cultural institutions across Europe, including cities holding the title of European Capital of Culture. These meetings contributed to the exchange of experiences, strengthening international cultural cooperation and further positioning of Nikšić in the European cultural space," the statement said.
The city of Oulu, located in northern Finland, holds the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture in 2026, with the "Culture Climate Change" program, which connects art with contemporary social and environmental challenges, promoting the rich and sustainable cultural scene of northern Europe, explain the people of Nikšić.
The opening ceremony program on the city square was officially opened by the President of Finland Alexander Stubb, and on that occasion the "Oulu Peace" declaration was proclaimed, calling for tolerance, creativity and a shared celebration of diversity through artistic and technological projects throughout 2026.
The opening program included more than 200 events at over 20 locations in the city center, including musical, theatrical and visual performances, art installations, light and acrobatic programs, most of which were free and open to all visitors.
This is the first time that the Nikšić delegation has attended the official Opening Ceremony of the European Capital of Culture as the title-holder city.
