Award-winning film "Fiume o morte!" returns to Podgorica today

Special screening of the documentary "Fiume o morte!" by the director Igor Bezinović will be held today in Podgorica, at 20 pm in the Great Hall of the Music Center of Montenegro, organized by the Montenegrin Cinematheque and the UnderhillFest International Documentary Film Festival, and admission is free.

"The multiple award-winning film won the award for Best European Documentary at the 38th European Film Awards held in Berlin. The film had its world premiere at the prestigious Rotterdam festival, where it won the festival's main prize, as well as the FIPRESCI award awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics," Underhill's statement recalls.

The Montenegrin Film Archive also confirms that this is an extremely notable documentary-essay film.

"The film deals with one of the most unusual and dramatic chapters in the history of Rijeka, when at the beginning of the 20th century the city became a scene of political experimentation, adventurism and radical ideas that marked European history. Bežinović, through a contemporary, layered film approach, reexamines the myths, ideologies and legacies of that period, combining archival material, contemporary perspectives and strong authorial commentary," the statement states.

Both Kinoteka and Underhill characterize it as "a provocative, visually powerful and authorially uncompromising film that raises questions of history, ideology and collective memory through the story of one of the most dramatic chapters of Europe's past".

"Fiume o morte!" was also shown at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), participated in more than 50 festivals where it won numerous awards, including six Golden Arenas at the Pula Film Festival, as well as the popular "European Oscar" - it was declared the best European documentary film in 2025, and the director was awarded the award at the European Film Academy Awards ceremony.

At last year's UnderhillFest in Podgorica, the audience had the opportunity to watch the film at the closing ceremony, and it also won the "Dandelion" award for best film in the regional selection.

Producers film "River or Death!" on Vanja Jambrović i Tibor Keser (Restart), the co-producer Marina Gumzi (Rhinoceros, Slovenia) and Eric Barbiani (Videomante, Italy). The director of photography is Gregor Bozic, editor Hrvoslava Brkusic, costume designer Tajci Cekada i Manuela Paladin.
