Exhibition "Superego" by the artist Ilija Vuković opened on Wednesday evening at the “Art” gallery in Podgorica, and visitors can view it until April 30. The very name of the exhibition is based on the interpretation of the irony of identity, materialization and utopian fragmentation, the curator pointed out. Aleksandra Butorović at the opening.

"As we all know from the field of psychology, the term superego itself denotes the structure of character that contains moral norms and ideals. This exhibition denotes the visual dominance of the superego as a society within us, through the loss of identity, where that superego actually breaks, undergoes testing, the figure becomes the bearer of the norm, and social pressure takes control. So we can freely say that Ilija's figures are the materialized superego distributed in a mass that erases individualism," Butorović pointed out.

She adds that the artist consciously displaces the deformed and transformed human figure, which is reduced to a mere representative symbol of consumerist culture, of bizarre and falsely constructed cosmopolitanism, while at the same time retaining a certain humorous component.

"Comprehensively inspired by his study stay in China and life in South Korea, Ilija often narratively emphasizes noticeable signs and inscriptions in Korean script where subjects manifest themselves as flag bearers, effectively written banners, or articulations of certain demonstrative manners that, instead of an imposed impression and a dose of heroism, indicate political primitivism," notes the curator.

Vuković expressed his gratitude to the Museums and Galleries of Podgorica and recalled that he had his first solo exhibition at the same place, 12 years ago.

"He curated that exhibition Marko Lukovac "Who is no longer with us, so I would now dedicate this exhibition to him as the man who first gave me a chance," Vuković emphasized.
