The play "Weeds", directed by Mirko Radonjić, based on the play "The Flower Girl", premiered last night in the Great Hall of the KIC "Budo Tomović", where it was greeted with long-lasting applause from the audience. The play tells a powerful and emotionally difficult story about women, violence, inherited patterns of behavior, and a society that often chooses silence instead of confrontation.
After its first performance, the play raised numerous questions about the position of women and the community's responsibility to speak openly about these problems, without softening or hiding reality.
Director Mirko Radonjić said after the premiere that the title of the play symbolically speaks of phenomena that are deeply rooted in Montenegrin society, especially when it comes to attitudes towards women and the normalization of misogyny.
"Theater may not be able to change the world, but it can open up space for serious conversation and confronting problems that we have been avoiding for too long. The play does not try to provide the audience with a sense of comfort, but rather to provoke discomfort and questioning. It is precisely the anxiety and feeling of nausea that some viewers spoke about after the preview that are proof that the play opens up painful but important topics," said director Radonjić after the premiere.
Actress Anja Misović She emphasized that the work process was extremely intense and emotionally demanding, but also special because of the freedom the ensemble had during the creation of the play.
"The theme is the female experience, but it essentially speaks about human suffering, empathy and the need to be open to other people's experiences," Misović pointed out, adding that the most important moment during the premiere for her was when she recognized the audience's sincere emotions and reactions.
Speaking about the message of the play, Misović emphasized: "The point is that someone recognizes their mother, sister, friend or neighbor in these women on stage and asks themselves what they are all going through."
Actress Tatjana Torbica believes that the play raises important topics about family upbringing and behavioral patterns that are passed down through generations.
"Women must learn to love and respect themselves more, but it is equally important how we raise children and what behavioral models we pass on," Torbica pointed out, emphasizing that there is a problem of lack of empathy in modern society.
She spoke particularly emotionally about her collaboration with director Mirko Radonjić.
"For the first time, after so many years, I happened to fall in love. With the director's talent, with the director's passion, kindness, giving, burning, originality, impudence, dedication, a complete dedication and sacrifice, a madness that we constantly had in rehearsals, a support from verbal to physical, emotional, and I have never had such a complex and difficult process. Not me, but almost all the girls," Torbica pointed out.
The play stars: Anja Misović, Danica Rajkovic, Dijana Dragojevic, Maja Šarenac, Tatjana Torbica, Ivona Covic Jacimovic, Sanja Vujisic i Branka Otašević.
The Podgorica City Theater says that the "Weeds" project confirms the company's commitment to theater that responds to social reality and opens space for dialogue, awareness, and change, with a special emphasis on connecting culture and education.
As part of the premiere evening in the lobby of the KIC "Budo Tomović", an exhibition of works by students of the Faculty of Visual Arts of the Mediterranean University was opened, created through collaboration on creating the visual identity of the play. Over the course of one semester, students of the master's degree and the third year of the Illustration module worked on conceptual solutions for the poster.
Female students participated in the project Jovana Jovanovic, Emilija Jovancevic, Magdalena Vukovic, Merima Hadzimuhovic, Sofija Miljkovac, Jovana Deletic, Marija Nuculovic i Staša Vuković.
Jovana Jovanović's work was chosen as the official poster for the show, while an exhibition of other student works will be available in the KIC lobby today.
A repeat performance of the play is scheduled for tonight at 20 p.m., as part of the Montenegrin Theater Showcase program.
