The Ministry of Economic Development of Italy gave the "green light" for the execution of Terna's project, which envisages the installation of an underwater energy cable between Italy and Montenegro by 2015.
"The Italy-Montenegro pipeline is of strategic importance for Italy because it contributes to strengthening our role as an energy hub between the European Union and Eastern Europe. The Italian Government continues with the policy of strengthening energy infrastructures," said the undersecretary in charge of energy issues at the Italian Ministry, Stefano Saglia. yesterday in Rome.
"This is a historic opportunity for Italy, because through the cable we will be able to import energy from Montenegro and its neighboring countries," said Salja, noting that Montenegro currently uses only 17 percent of its hydropower potential.
The Italian media reported yesterday that the project will cost 820 million euros, while a slightly lower figure of 760 million was mentioned earlier.
Together with the Saipei cable (also a Terna project) that recently connected the island of Sardinia with the Apennine peninsula (and which cost 750 million), the Italy-Montenegro cable represents one of the most expensive Italian projects in history when it comes to investments in electrical infrastructure.
