High trade margins in Slovenia are the main culprit for rising food prices, and the majority of citizens support the Government's intention to review them, according to a survey published by Ljubljana's Delo. According to the survey in which 600 respondents participated, 72 percent of the participants agreed with the opinion that trade margins are the main culprit of the recent increase in the price of basic foodstuffs such as meat, milk and bread at the beginning of this year. As many as 88 percent believe that the Government must limit trade margins in order to prevent further increases in the prices of food products and the possible impact on the growth of inflation and the drop in standards this year, reports Poslovni dnevnik. Slovenian Minister of Agriculture Dejan Židan recently accused retail chains of "fixing prices" in the food sector and announced that the Government will organize meetings of agricultural associations with the food industry and traders, in order to reach a fair scale in the distribution of profits in the food sector.
