SDP presidency member Mirko Stanić called on the Government of Montenegro to find a solution in discussions with domestic water producers that will protect Montenegrin producers when it comes to the introduction of a new excise tax on plastic packaging.
As he said, water production has been on the verge of profitability until now, primarily due to the huge and often unfair competition from the region.
"One of the key issues for the future of the Montenegrin economy is the increase of domestic production and the reduction of the huge trade deficit that our country has. We import almost six times more goods than we export, so billions of euros flow out of Montenegro every year. It is precisely for the import of water "We have spent almost 100 million euros in the past 10 years, even though our water sources are among the best in Europe, and there are seven modern factories operating in the country, which also have huge export potential," the announcement states.
According to him, so far the state has not shown the right attitude towards them, as it has not towards a number of other production activities.
"We expect the new government to change this perverted practice and give priority to domestic producers. So if we already have to import computers, oil or tropical fruit, there is no need to give millions for water and at the same time tax domestic producers heavily. That's why we will continue strongly insist on supporting domestic water producers, but also food producers because we spend almost 500 million euros a year on food imports," the statement concluded.
