The number of employees in July this year was 258 thousand, which is the highest number ever recorded in Montenegro.
According to the data of the Monstat Administration of Statistics, compared to July last year, the number of employees increased by 23 thousand, and compared to the same month of pre-crisis 2019, by as much as 43 thousand. This growth, in addition to the increase in wages, also affected the record amounts of pension insurance contribution collection, which in July 2019 amounted to EUR 29 million, and this year to EUR 44,4 million.
The number of unemployed, according to data from the Employment Service, in July this year was 38,7 thousand, and it increased by 4,2 thousand compared to the same month in 2019.
The simultaneous growth of the number of employed and unemployed is only possible for two reasons, that workers from the gray labor market have legalized their status due to the reduction of taxes and contributions on wages, or that there has been a large increase in employed foreigners. The number of both employed and unemployed compared to July 2019 increased by 47 thousand.
Compared to July 2019, the largest increase in the number of employees occurred in the wholesale and retail trade sector, by 7,5 thousand, so that 49.737 workers are now working in this industry, that is, almost every fifth employee.
The number of employees in the accommodation and food service sector, which includes hotels and catering, increased from 25,4 thousand in July 2019 to 32,5 thousand in the same month of this year. This is an increase of 7,1 thousand workers.
In the field of information and communication, the number of employees in this period has more than doubled, from 5,5 to 11,3 thousand.
In July 2019, 10,6 thousand workers worked in professional, scientific and technical activities, and now that number has increased to 15,4 thousand.
In the construction sector, the number of workers increased from 14,1 to 17,8 thousand, in the field of education from 13,2 to 16,7 thousand, and in health and social care from 12,7 to 15 thousand workers.

The growth of employees occurred in almost all areas, that is, not only in one called "administrative and auxiliary service activities", where the number decreased from 13,9 to 12,2 thousand. This area mostly refers to employment mediation agencies, which according to these data now have less work in the so-called "redirecting" of workers who are formally registered with them as employees, and pass them on to other employers who thus avoid the obligation to give them an employment contract. indefinitely.

Compared to July 2019, there was an increase in the number of employees in every municipality.
The largest increase was recorded in Podgorica, by 12 thousand - to 107,5 thousand workers.
