Elektroprivreda (EPCG) and the Government should adopt clear criteria, based on facts, on subsidizing bills for consumed electricity in the winter period, said member of the Main Board and candidate for vice president of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Elvir Zvrko.

"This will ensure that the citizens of some municipalities, such as Bijelo Polje, are not put in a discriminatory position," said Zvrko in a statement.

He assessed that EPCG's decision to subsidize electricity bills for the citizens of Pljevlja is justified, with the aim of reducing air pollution, but that it needs to be reviewed and corrected.

"It is evident that citizens in other cities of Montenegro are also at risk due to poor air quality and they should not be put in a subordinate position," Zvrko believes.

He said that air pollution is a major health problem, as it is estimated to cause over four million premature deaths worldwide.

"It is estimated that over a thousand people die annually in Montenegro due to air pollution, mostly due to exposure to PM 2,5 particles, then NO2 and ground-level ozone," said Zvrko.

The worst air quality in Montenegro is in Pljevlje, Bijelo Polje, Podgorica and Nikšić.

"Montenegro identified air quality as a priority for the well-being of its population and nature in 2015. Considering that it is difficult for us to give up the use of fossil fuels, the problem of air pollution is not easy to solve", concluded Zvrko.
