Representatives of Elektroprivreda (EPCG) and Žičara Kotor-Lovćen signed a Memorandum of Understanding today in order to establish a framework for identifying opportunities for future cooperation, with a focus on renewable energy sources.
The power company announced that EPCG has a strong need for a stable and reliable supply of electricity, preferably based on renewable energy sources, wherever possible, in order to enable Montenegro to exploit its potential and achieve economic growth.
In order to realize the stated goals, EPCG strives to achieve partnership with reliable entities.
"The Kotor-Lovćen cable car is one of the key infrastructure tourism projects in Montenegro. The company strives to respect the principles of environmental protection and sustainability, which will be further contributed to by the gradual transition to the dominant use of renewable energy sources," the announcement states.
Connecting the city of Kotor with the Lovćen National Park, Žičara enables the reduction of car traffic and emissions of harmful gases in this protected natural area.
"At the moment, the most interesting projects for the establishment of potential cooperation between EPCG and the Kotor-Lovćen Cable Car relate to the installation of photovoltaic systems at the Dub station, where there is a large number of parking spaces for passenger cars and buses, and the Kuk station, which has significant land areas around the facilities", specified from EPCG.
The President of the EPCG Board of Directors, Milutin Đukanović, stated that the development of new projects in the domain of renewable energy sources represents the company's strategic orientation.
"Three years ago, by starting the Solari 3000+ and 500+ project, and then by continuing it in the form of the SOLARI 5000+ project, we showed our readiness to tackle the challenges of the energy transition. We believe that the business philosophy of 'Produce where you spend' proves to be a winning combination, both for our company and for all citizens of Montenegro", stated Đukanović.
The executive director of EPCG, Ivan Bulatović, said that energy is the engine of socio-economic development of every country.
"Given the fact that energy, for understandable reasons, has been a central topic in the public's mind for the past few years, it is clear that the definition of priorities and strategies for the development of the energy sector have a significant impact on the quality of life and standard of citizens," said Bulatović.
He said that the priority of the development of the electric power sector in Montenegro, as well as in other countries of the region, South-Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans in the period up to 2030, should be the development of renewable energy sources, fully aligned with the energy and climate policies of the European Union.
"In this regard, I believe that, in the context of the valorization of renewable energy sources, EPCG should cooperate with all relevant factors in Montenegro, and the Kotor-Lovćen Cable Car is certainly one of them, especially considering the fact that energy and tourism in the area with the greatest development potential", said Bulatović.
He used the opportunity to invite other companies to join the Solari 5000+ project, because it is the optimal variant for the overall development of Montenegro.
The President of the Management Board of the Kotor-Lovćen Cable Car, Martin Leitner, assessed that today's signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is in accordance with the fundamental values of the operation and operation of the Kotor-Lovćen Cable Car.
"Today's announced start of the gradual transition to the use of renewable energy sources is part of our strategic commitment, which is aimed at protecting the environment and respecting the principles of sustainability. In this way, we will have the opportunity to preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us and for which the Kotor-Lovćen cable car is recognized in the world. Finally, I would like to point out that we are glad that EPCG is our ally in the effort to ensure a healthier environment for future generations," said Leitner.
The executive director of the Kotor-Lovćen Cable Car, Marco Cus, referred to the importance of the transition to the use of renewable energy sources to the visitors of the Cable Car.
"By using renewable energy sources, we improve the experience of our visitors, but also highlight the importance of environmental protection. I believe that visitors to the Žičara will enjoy all the benefits brought by the announced transition to renewable energy sources and that together we will continue to nurture and preserve our nature," said Cus.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was attended by technical director of EPCG, Ljubiša Đurković, financial director of EPCG, Branislav Pejović, members of the Management Board of Žičara Kotor-Lovćen, Aleksandar Mitrović and Milan Ivanović, and executive director of Novi Volvox, Slavoljub Popadić.
