The pension system is more than an economic category and is a pillar of social security of society, while the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIO) is a promise of intergenerational solidarity, but also intergenerational trust, announced Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović.
"Ensuring the stability of the pension system means providing support to those who built our country, enabling them to enjoy the benefits of their work," said Milatović at the opening of the panel on the future of the pension system in Montenegro, which brought together regional experts in the field of public finance.
He said that the PIO Fund is not just a "flow boiler", as its role is often revitalized.
"He is the pillar of our welfare state, as our Constitution defines it. The PIO Fund is a promise of intergenerational solidarity, but also intergenerational trust, and no one has the right to cheat on that trust," said Milatović.
He added that frequent changes to the PIO Act and recent changes in minimum pensions opened the question of the fairness of current pension calculations.
"We must be careful and reject the temptations of economic populism and short-term benefits. We should focus on long-term and sustainable solutions, which will ensure stability and prosperity for all citizens", Milatović believes.
He added that there is no doubt that the Montenegrin economy needed the Europe Now 1 reform.
This is the second panel Conversation with the President, after an open discussion on the European perspective of Montenegro, with the rector of the College of Europe, Federica Mogherini.
The conversation with the president, a format that includes discussions on topics that are important to the Montenegrin public, is an opportunity for citizens, through dialogue and exchange of opinions of eminent experts in thematic areas, to present perspectives and open discussions on topics of importance for the future of society.
