Electricity from biogas, a solar power plant on the roof of the landfill, LED lighting are some of the energy projects that Podgorica has prioritized, said the capital city.
Some of them, as they add, such as energy production from biogas, are the first in Montenegro. They state that the new course of action when it comes to energy, but also environmental protection, starts with waste treatment.
"Biofuel is a new development opportunity and responsible waste management leads to a new resource," say the administration of the Capital City.
One of the projects is the construction of a plant for the production of electricity from landfill gas. The new power plant, a pioneering project in Montenegro, will be located in the area of the landfill, next to the already built sanitary baths.
"The production of electricity from landfill gas is considered a renewable source of energy and has a positive environmental effect due to the prevention of emissions and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, while generating economic profit. The consent of the Assembly of the capital city was obtained for the tender announcement", they explain from the capital city.
The biogas power plant would have a characteristic power of about 6.570.000 kw/h per year, and the value of the planned investment is about 2.000.000 euros.
The project will be implemented in the form of a private-public partnership. In 2014, after biogas capture was carried out at the Livade landfill, which cost around 130.000 euros, conditions were created for the construction of a plant for the production of electricity from biogas.
The capital city says that there is a lot of interest in this project from both domestic and foreign addresses. The private partner will have the obligation to invest additionally in covering the existing sanitary tub. Documentation related to the implementation of this project is currently being prepared.
"The produced electricity will be directed through the CEDIS system, because according to the Law on Energy, CEDIS is obliged to purchase electricity from renewable and alternative sources at a preferential price of eight cents per kilowatt hour. The power plant will also create several maintenance jobs," they say in the capital. They plan to build a solar power plant on the roofs of the landfill.
They add that 7000-8000 tons of green waste are produced in Podgorica every year, so the plan is to implement a green waste treatment plant project - a composting plant - in the first half of next year.
They explain that it is a plant that turns all types of green waste into humus that can be marketed in the agricultural sector.
With LED, it will save electricity
In addition to the production of electricity, they also plan to save money in the capital by, as they say, introducing LED technology.
"In the first phase of implementation, around 10.750 lamps will be replaced in rural areas and in suburban settlements. The tender procedure for the first phase of the works is underway," they say in the capital.
The estimated value of the works of the first phase is 6.700.000 euros, while the entire project is estimated at around 16.800.000 euros. The money, they say, will be provided from the expected electricity savings. For the first phase of introducing LED technology lamps (suburban and rural areas), savings of over 80% of the current electricity consumption are expected.
