The Ministry of Tourism and the Eco-Fund, with the support of the European Union (EU), have awarded subsidies totaling 2,5 million euros to 15 hotels across the country, as part of a program to encourage energy efficiency.

"This successfully completed the most demanding part of an extremely important project, which showed that Montenegro can and must follow the path of sustainable development, responsible resource management and strengthening competitiveness in tourism," the Ministry of Tourism said in a statement.

Minister of Tourism Simonida Kordić said at the contract award ceremony that this is the first concrete step towards transforming the tourism sector, where innovation, modernization and environmental responsibility intertwine into a single goal - strengthening our tourism offer in a way that brings benefits to both the economy and the environment.

"This EU donation is not only financial assistance, but also a strong message of trust in our vision and commitment to sustainable development. The support of international partners has enabled us to achieve concrete results - reduced energy consumption in 15 hotels, increased guest comfort, as well as a reduced carbon footprint, which contributes to the preservation of natural resources and strengthening the ecological image of Montenegro," Kordić emphasized.

She added that the completion of this project does not end their commitment to sustainable tourism.

"On the contrary, we are showing that Montenegro can set standards in the region when it comes to green and energy-efficient tourism," added Kordić.

Hotels had the opportunity to receive subsidies worth 60 thousand to 200 thousand euros, and special awards were given to those that operate throughout the year, thereby contributing to overcoming the problem of seasonality, as well as to those operating in the north of the country, whose development is among the priorities of the current government.

"This event confirms that Montenegro can make big steps when there is a clear vision, determination and cross-sectoral cooperation," the statement said.

The project will continue through the remaining funds, with the support of international partners, and the ultimate goal is the efficient use of resources and modernization of accommodation facilities, thereby improving the overall experience of staying in Montenegro.
