Minister of Transport Maja Vukićević (DNP) announced today that she has certain reservations regarding the agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"At the electronic session of the Government of Montenegro, I did not support the Proposal of the Basis for Negotiations and Conclusion of the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism and Real Estate Development between the Government of Montenegro and the Government of the United Arab Emirates. The reason for this is that I have certain reservations about the proposed agreement. I am not opposed to investments - on the contrary, I believe that Montenegro needs them. However, Velika Plaza is a natural resource that we need to preserve, and I do not think it is good to cede its entire territory to investors without prior clear guarantees and analyses," Vukićević wrote on the social network Instagram.
She added that she believes that projects like this must be well considered, with complete transparency to ensure that they are in the best interest of the state and citizens.
The governments of Montenegro and the United Arab Emirates signed agreements on economic cooperation and joint investment the day before yesterday, at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.
DNP President Milan Knežević said earlier in an interview with Newsmax Balkans that no one from the party was aware of the intention of Prime Minister and leader of the Europe Now Movement (PES) Milojko Spajić to sign an agreement with the UAE.
"Later, our representatives in the government were informed about this initiative," he explained in an interview with Newsmax Balkan.
When asked how they voted, he explained that there is no voting in the Government, but rather that opinions are expressed.
"Since there was a framework agreement, my colleague (Deputy Prime Minister Milun) Zogović and my colleague (Minister of Transport Maja) Vukićević voted for that framework agreement, and for this agreement that followed, my colleague Vukićević dissented, and my colleague Zogović voted for the agreement, because he thought it relied on the basic agreement that was adopted. However, today we had a new conclusion from the Government, where the entire legal procedure and the assessment of the entire agreement were transferred to the Parliament, and in this way at least one mystery was eliminated. Until this morning, we did not know whether this would be within the competence of the Parliament to decide or not, and we considered that to be very problematic," said Knežević.
