The Ulcinj NGO Network believes that the Montenegrin Government should take into account the recommendations of the professional community and colleagues from the civil sector, and accept the conclusions of the Ulcinj Municipal Assembly regarding the announcement of a possible lease of Velika Plaza for 99 years. In a statement, the Ulcinj NGOs appreciate that the potential investor is also aware that without the support of the local community, such a grandiose project cannot be successful.

"The responsible government must understand and accept this. As is also the fact that Ulcinj is the oldest city on the eastern coast of the Adriatic, that the people of Ulcinj have fought fervently for their communal rights and for the protection of their dignity throughout history, that this most tolerant city in the region has its own tradition, good customs and indigenous way of life. And that this has been the case for centuries and millennia," the statement reads.

It is estimated that the Government has put freedom, competences and development at risk through hasty decisions, by agreeing behind the backs of the entire Ulcinj, but also Montenegrin public, the project of the so-called valorization of Velika Plaza.

"If this were to happen, contrary to all valid urban plans, Ulcinj would irretrievably lose its most valuable natural gem, and the damage from the implementation of such a project for its citizens would be much, much greater than any benefit," the statement reads, among other things.

It is added that the civil sector is convinced "that in this case we must become even more aware of the importance of the space we have, to preserve it, protect it and use it in the best interest of our community, but also of those who will come after us."

"They also have the right to their plans, and not for us to destroy everything for them under the pretext of development and sweet dreams of billions. Because space is also being wasted and destroyed. And without Velika Plaza, we remain permanently damaged, a community doomed to die out. We absolutely must not allow something like that," it ends.
