A delegation of the European Parliament's Budget Committee will visit Montenegro next week, from 26 to 28 May, to assess the implementation of the recently established Reform and Growth Instrument for the Western Balkans, ongoing pre-accession support, as well as the potential budgetary implications of Montenegro's possible accession to the Multiannual Financial Framework after 2027, RTCG reports.

In early May, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the budget for the period 2028-2034, calling for a significantly more ambitious Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) that can meet the growing expectations of European Union citizens in the context of global instability.

The current spending ceiling of one percent of the gross national income of the 27 EU member states is not sufficient to address the growing number of crises and challenges, MEPs stressed on the occasion.

"As the US withdraws from its global role, spending will have to be directed at Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, very challenging economic and social circumstances, a competitiveness gap, and the worsening climate and biodiversity crises," the resolution reads.

Parliament's priorities are designed to be taken into account in the Commission's proposal for the next long-term EU budget, which is due to be published in July.

The multiannual financial framework (MFF) is established for a period of seven years and sets maximum spending ceilings for different policy areas. After obtaining the consent of Parliament, EU governments unanimously adopt the MFF regulation. The current long-term EU budget expires on 31 December 2027.
