The Railway Transport of Montenegro (ŽPCG) introduced a new passenger tariff at the beginning of June and abolished the promotional ticket price, which is why the ticket on some sections is now twice as expensive. Thus, the transport from Podgorica to Nikšić and vice versa, instead of the previous euro and a half, you have to pay 3,2 euros, while the ride from the Capital to Bijelo Polje costs 5,2 instead of the previous 3,5 euros, with the ticket from Podgorica to Bar being 50 cents more expensive...
ŽPCG officially told “Vijesti” that “there has been no increase in regular transportation prices, but only the cancellation of promotional tickets and that the ticket is essentially less expensive than in 2008.” The state-owned company has been applying these promotional prices for almost ten years.
"Until June 1, 2025, the Passenger Tariff, which was adopted back in 2008, was in force. With the new Passenger Tariff, regular fares are lower than in 2008, with the promotional ticket prices being abolished. Therefore, there was no increase in prices, but a reduction in regular fares," emphasized ŽPCG.
"Vijesti" also visited the Podgorica train station platform yesterday and asked passengers if they felt the price increases, but they briefly said that ticket prices were not high anyway.
According to data provided by ŽPCG, the current ticket price from Podgorica to Bar of 2,8 euros is still 20 cents cheaper than the one from 2008, which cost three euros. The price of transportation from Podgorica to Nikšić is also 20 cents cheaper now, compared to 17 years ago when it cost 3,4 euros. The current ticket from the capital to Bijelo Polje is 1,2 euros cheaper than in 2008, when it cost 6,4 euros.
The ŽPCG website points out that tickets are charged one euro more from conductors at stations where there are ticket offices, namely in Bar, Sutomore, Podgorica, Nikšić and Bijelo Polje.
The Board of Directors of ŽPCG also adopted amendments to the passenger tariff for domestic transport at its meeting on May 8, which introduced benefits for the most vulnerable categories of the population. Specifically, people suffering from cancer, dystrophy and related diseases, multiple sclerosis and those on dialysis are entitled to free transportation, while their companions pay half the ticket price.
In addition, now both pupils and students can take out an annual subscription ticket for an unlimited number of trips from their place of residence to school and back. Such a ticket on the Podgorica - Bar and Podgorica - Nikšić lines costs 30 euros, while for the one from the Capital to Bijelo Polje it is necessary to set aside 60 euros. The previous privileges are also in force, such that children up to six years old travel for free.
