Within the Pljevlja Coal Mine (RUP), there are various departments that have the potential to stand out as separate activities and continue to operate in the market, announced the company's executive director, Nemanja Laković.

"Our construction group is already successfully winning contracts through tender procedures with EPCG, the Eco Fund and the Municipality of Pljevlja, which confirms its market potential," said Laković, presenting activities within the Just Transition Plan through Business Transformation, which this year was the focus of the international energy symposium EPCG NET 2025.

As announced by RUP, he highlighted key projects and strategic directions aimed at diversifying business and strengthening the company's market competitiveness.

A special step forward was made by the overhaul of the asphalt base plant in Židovići, which is now technically ready for the construction season and provides 20 new real jobs. In the field of renewable energy sources, RUP has initiated procedures for obtaining UT conditions for the construction of a 50 megawatt (MW) solar power plant, while the technical documentation for the Durutovići small hydroelectric power plant has been completed.

"In accordance with the legal obligation to recultivate land, RUP has planned to recultivate 35 hectares of land this year, more than has been done in the past 15 years. By withdrawing the open-pit mine from the city center and relocating the Ćehotina riverbed, a new urban zone is being created in which the development of a business and tourist center is planned, for which discussions with potential investors are already underway," Laković added.

Although the transformation is being intensively implemented, the shutdown of the RUP system and the Pljevlja TPP is not realistic in the near future, as they represent key pillars of Montenegro's energy stability. At the same time, the Transition Plan opens up space for sustainable development of the local community through green and innovative projects.

The international symposium EPCG NET 2025 brought together around 250 participants from 17 countries, including leading experts in the fields of renewable sources, just transition, energy efficiency, energy storage and new technologies.
