An international roundtable, or expert discussion on investments from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and their implications for developments in the Western Balkans, will be held in Ulcinj on Monday, September 15th.
The expert discussion is jointly organized by Carnegie Europe and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, with the participation of local civil society representatives and regional experts.
"The theme of the event will be the impact of UAE investments in the Western Balkans, with a focus on the democratic, environmental and social aspects of large urban and coastal development projects," the organizers said in a letter sent to "Vijesti".
It is emphasized that the discussion will bring together Montenegrin non-governmental organizations dealing with issues of good governance, environmental protection and participatory spatial planning, together with experts from Albania and Serbia who are dealing with similar investment models in their countries.
It is stated that the goal is to exchange experiences and consider how such projects affect transparency, accountability and local participation in the decision-making process.
"The results of the discussion will contribute to the preparation of an upcoming political publication whose main author is a woman from Ulcinj." Iliriana John, who is a political analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank, one of the most famous and influential analytical centers in the world. The publication will be presented at the end of the year in Brussels and Berlin,” the letter states.
For Carnegie Europe and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, it is added, this initiative represents a joint regional approach to developing inclusive and democratic practices in the Western Balkan countries.
The expert discussion will be organized with the support of the Center for Civic Education (CCE), the Center for Bird Protection and Research (CZIP), and the “Dr Martin Schneider-Jacoby” Association (MSJA).
