The non-governmental organization (NGO) Zagrad Montenegro announced today that residents of the village of Zagrad informed it that they had prevented the removal of materials from the abandoned "Zagrad" mine, expressing concern over the unclear status of this site.
The NGO said that they had sent an official request to the company DOO Uniprom Metali, the concessionaire of the mine, seeking clarification on plans for the further management of this area.
The letter asked three questions:
What are the company's further plans for the mine?
When is the land reclamation process scheduled to begin, considering that bauxite ore exploitation has not been active for three years?
Has the space been given for use by third parties and under what conditions?
The NGO Zagrad Montenegro stated that the current state of the mine is causing serious concern among locals and the general public, especially due to the possible consequences for the environment and the quality of life of citizens, and that they were informed this morning that citizens had prevented the removal of the material.
"We do not know what exactly this is about, and we have not received a response from Uniprom. We would like to remind you that the mine is located in a populated area, and that timely and responsible action is of key importance for the protection of health, safety and quality of life of citizens, as well as for the preservation of the environment," said the NGO Zagrad Montenegro.
