Đukanović: Gvozd wind farm will significantly strengthen production from renewable sources

"I would like to express my great satisfaction that the transport of wind generators from the Port of Bar to the Gvozd location has begun, as part of the Gvozd 1 wind farm project," said Milutin Đukanović, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electric Power Company of Montenegro (EPCG).

Montenegro is entering a new phase of energy transition, with the Gvozd wind farm (WP) significantly strengthening production from renewable sources, announced the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electric Power Company (EPCG), Milutin Đukanović.

"I would like to express my great satisfaction that the transport of wind generators from the Port of Bar to the Gvozd location has begun, as part of the Gvozd 1 wind farm project. I expect all wind generators to be installed by the end of the year and that we will release the first kilowatt hours of electricity into the grid already during that period," said Đukanović.

On the night between Monday and Tuesday, the transport of equipment from Bar to Krnovo began for the Gvozd wind farm, one of the most significant projects that the EU is implementing within the framework of the energy transition and the development of renewable energy sources.

"The project, worth approximately 82 million euros, is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and its annual production is estimated at 150 to 200 gigawatt hours of electricity, which is enough to power approximately 20 thousand households," the statement said.

By building Gvozde, it is added, EPCG significantly increases the share of renewable sources in its production portfolio, reduces carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and contributes to strengthening the energy independence of Montenegro.

Đukanović waited at Dukla for the passage of the first three specialized vehicles transporting parts of the first wind generator pole, 113 meters high.

He added that the wind turbines being installed on Gvozd will be among the largest on land in Europe, in terms of power and size.

"The Gvozd 1 project, financed by the EBRD with 82 million euros, confirms the trust of international financial institutions in EPCG," said Đukanović.

He announced that EPCG would immediately continue with the implementation of the Gvozd 2 project, with a capacity of 21 megawatts (MW), as well as with the development of solar power plants throughout Montenegro.

"The two wind farms will produce around 200 thousand MWh per year, which will bring in revenue of approximately 20 million euros. By the end of the year, we expect EPCG to have close to 200 MW of new installed capacity," Djukanović specified.

He recalled that since 2022, the company has implemented a number of significant projects in the field of renewable energy sources.

"From the Solari 3000+ and Solari 500+ projects, through Solari 5000+, to the development of solar power plants throughout Montenegro - Kapino Polje, Krupac with a capacity of 50 MW, Štedim 150 MW, Gračanica 20 MW, SE Slano - then the Gvozd 1 wind farm with a capacity of 55 MW, which will represent 150 GWh and Gvozd 2 with a capacity of 21 MW, which will produce an additional 50 GWh, the imminent opening of the tender for the installation of the eighth generator at the Perućica HPP with a capacity of 58 MW and perhaps most importantly, the development of battery systems. All of this will contribute to a better supply and more favorable price of electricity," believes Đukanović.

He said that the question is no longer whether they will do something, but when they will finish it.

"We are moving forward at full speed," emphasized Đukanović, adding that by implementing all planned projects, EPCG will build a total of around 700 MW of new capacity in the next two to three years.

Djukanovic assessed that Montenegro has a huge opportunity in energy development and green transition.

"New capacities from renewable energy sources will provide citizens with a stable supply and affordable electricity prices, while at the same time contributing to the creation of new jobs and strengthening the energy independence of the country," concluded Đukanović.
