The Europe Now parliamentary group announced that it "strongly supports" maintaining the Sunday non-working holiday in retail, because, as they said, it is a decision that is at the same time fair, socially responsible and economically correct.
"A non-working Sunday is a symbol of a society that values work and respects people. Abolishing this right would mean returning to a time of exhaustion and insecurity, when employees were voiceless and without rest. The Europe Movement will not allow this to happen again," the statement reads.
They said that this is why they have put amendments to the Internal Trade Act into procedure, which are "harmonized with the assessments of the Constitutional Court."
"Before 2019, retail workers were exposed to overwork, low wages and a lack of union protection, without a single guaranteed day off. Such a system was unsustainable and deeply unfair. With the introduction of a non-working Sunday, thousands of workers in Montenegro were given a secure day off for the first time - the minimum that every civilized society owes to those who carry the economy on their backs," the PES added.
At the same time, they said, practice has shown that economic activity in the trade sector has not weakened - "on the contrary, it has increased."
"Traffic in stores is stable, and the largest retail chains, despite the Sunday holiday, are achieving record profits and expanding their business. This clearly shows that the ban on Sunday work is not an obstacle to the economy, but rather proof that it is possible to build a sustainable growth model in which both the worker and the employer benefit."
They said that PES will always be on the side of workers, families and sustainable development. "A non-working Sunday is not just an economic measure, but a value-based position that people should be provided with time for rest, family and a dignified life," the party's parliamentary group said.
