The Pljevlja Coal Mine (RUP) has successfully implemented one of the most important infrastructure and strategic projects for the Montenegrin power system – the relocation of the Ćehotina riverbed. The ceremonial commissioning of the new riverbed confirmed the importance of this capital project for the country's energy stability.
The event was attended by RUP Executive Director Nemanja Laković, Minister of Energy and Mining Admir Šahmanović, as well as representatives of the Electric Power Company of Montenegro (EPCG).
RUP Executive Director Nemanja Laković pointed out that the completion of the project provided multiple benefits, both for the state's energy system, as well as for RUP and EPCG.
"Today, with the completion of this project, we have provided multiple benefits for the citizens of Montenegro, RUP and EPCG. Our energy system and RUP now function much more safely. As you know, two months ago we faced massive landslides caused by the approach of the work front to the Ćehotina River. Today, our miners can at least partially breathe a sigh of relief, because we are entering a zone of safer and more secure work. The project was implemented within the planned, even shortened, deadline, with full respect for technical documentation, legal procedures and environmental protection measures," Laković emphasized.
He added that this was a historic day for the company, and expressed his gratitude to employees, contractors, supervisory authorities, competent institutions, and the local community for their constructive cooperation.
"Long-term stability of the river flow has been ensured, environmental protection has been improved, the risk of floods has been reduced, and at the same time, conditions have been created for the smooth and planned development of mining activities, in accordance with applicable regulations and the highest environmental standards. Therefore, we enter 2026 with the desire for even more success, dedicated work and wise decisions," Laković emphasized.
Laković also explained that the project is currently in the trial phase, after which, after the competent commissions have determined its correctness, the tunnel of the old Ćehotina riverbed will be closed, which will completely complete the project.
Minister of Energy and Mining Admir Šahmanović congratulated the management and employees of RUP, emphasizing that they have demonstrated the capacity and readiness to implement complex and demanding projects.
"By putting the new Ćehotina riverbed into trial operation, we are completing a long-term and complex process, which was necessary for the stability of the energy system and the protection of important state resources. We are aware that the energy sector today faces serious challenges. We are facing a period in which we must solve inherited problems and complete projects that have been delayed for too long. This project shows that this is possible when there is vision, cooperation and responsibility. Our obligation is to make decisions that ensure development, but also preserve natural resources and the interests of citizens," said Šahmanović.
The relocation of the Ćehotina riverbed was assessed as an example of successful planning, responsible management of natural resources and efficient cooperation between key institutions, with a clear message of optimism and confidence in the further development and modernization of the Montenegrin power system.
