According to today's prices of petroleum products on international stock exchanges, Eurodiesel could become cheaper in Montenegro by about ten cents per liter from Tuesday unless the Government again makes a decision to return part of the excise duties.

In the past three weeks, the Government has already refunded part of the excise taxes twice whenever fuel was supposed to become cheaper.

At the end of March, when fuel prices were at record highs, the government reduced excise duties on diesel by 50 percent and on gasoline by 25 percent.

Eurodiesel was supposed to be cheaper by 10 cents as of April 20, but the Government reduced the excise duty reduction from 50 to 35 percent, so diesel became cheaper by two cents at that time. Although this decision was valid for a month, on April 28, the Government reduced the reduction from 35 to 30 percent, which meant that diesel became cheaper by only one cent instead of four.

Starting Monday, two types of gasoline should be cheaper by a few cents.

In both cases when the Government returned part of the excise tax to the price calculation, the decisions were made late in the evening, just an hour or two before midnight. This, as "Vijesti" previously wrote, created opportunities for abuse, because the excise tax is paid according to the moment of declaration for customs clearance. In other words, information about whether the excise tax will be higher or lower tomorrow can be worth hundreds of thousands of euros.
