Digital transformation is the key to the development of modern tourism statistics, said the Director of Monstat, Miroslav Pejović, at the IAOS 2026 international conference in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Pejović, as explained by Monstat, was a panelist at the session titled Tourism and New Data Sources, which was dedicated to new data sources and the digital transformation of tourism statistics.
At the panel, Pejović presented Montenegro's experiences and Monstat's activities in developing a unified tourism information system (TIS), as a strategic solution for improving data management, interoperability between institutions, and modernization of tourism statistics.
He pointed out the importance of integrating new data sources, strengthening inter-institutional cooperation, and developing interoperable digital systems that enable better quality, timely, and reliable statistical indicators for the purposes of public policymaking and tourism sector development.
The panel also included representatives of Eurostat, national statistical institutions, and experts in the field of official statistics and data management, and discussed the challenges and opportunities brought by the use of new data sources in official statistics.
"The IAOS conference represents one of the most important international gatherings in the field of official statistics, bringing together representatives of statistical institutions, international organizations and the academic community from around the world," the statement concludes.
