Ćulafić: The policies we implement are recognized at the international level

He stated that he is particularly pleased with the fact that Lake Skadar, which is only part of the "Skadar Lake Basin" biosphere reserve in Montenegro, has also been granted the same status on the Albanian side, which opens up the possibility of a joint approach and cooperation within the UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere" program.

The declaration of the Skadar Lake Basin as one of 14 new UNESCO biosphere reserves confirms that Montenegro is on the right track and that the policies it implements are recognized at the international level, said the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić.

According to the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS), he stated that he is particularly pleased with the fact that Lake Skadar, which is only part of the "Skadar Lake Basin" biosphere reserve in Montenegro, has also been granted the same status on the Albanian side, which opens up the possibility of a joint approach and cooperation within the UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere" program.

"Thereby, the sustainable management of this unique area can be further strengthened," added Ćulafić.

This status, he said, confirms the importance of preserving natural values.

"But at the same time, it places a special focus on local communities, improving the quality of life of their residents, developing sustainable economic activities, and establishing a balance between nature protection and social development," said Ćulafić.

According to him, this is confirmation that Montenegro has a vision that preserves and nurtures natural values, but also recognizes that the people who live in these areas are key partners in their preservation.

"Our goal is to develop in accordance with the vision of Montenegro, which coincides with the goal of the biosphere reserve and which implies the preservation of already recognized key biodiversity and cultural points, sustainable development which implies the development of responsible tourism, encouraging scientific research and valorization of local potentials, as well as their active involvement in the activities of the biosphere reserve," said Ćulafić.

He thanked everyone who, as he stated, with their dedicated work, knowledge and dedication contributed to the Skadar Lake Basin receiving recognition that will be an incentive for its preservation and sustainable development.
