Mikić: Pensions for pensioners would be 40 euros higher if the Government had accepted the GP URA proposal

If the Government and the parliamentary majority had accepted the proposal of the Civic Movement URA, every pensioner in Montenegro would receive 40 euros more today, and instead the average pension for July increased by only six cents, said Zoran Mikić, a member of parliament from the Civic Movement URA.

He assessed that the latest pension increase is the best indicator of the wrong priorities and failed economic policy of this Government, as well as the justification of the GP URA's request for additional pension increases.

Mikić said that he will not give up on that goal.

He recalled that the Government and the parliamentary majority at the end of July rejected a proposal from the movement to which he belongs to increase all pensions by 40 euros and adjust them four times a year instead of three times.

"If our proposal had been accepted, the minimum pension today would be 500 euros, and all other pensioners would receive 40 euros more. Instead, the average pension this month has been increased by six cents," he said.

He pointed out that rising prices for food, medicine, housing and other basic expenses require the state to more actively protect the living standards of its oldest citizens.

"During the high inflation of 2022 and 2023, the government of Dritan Abazović showed that the state can react additionally when regular adjustments are not enough to protect pensioners from rising living costs. This is exactly the approach that is needed today," he is convinced.

MP GP URA said that at the new session of the Parliament, his parliamentary group will once again raise the issue of increasing pensions.

"The model may be a subject of discussion, but the goal must remain the same: pensioners must receive an increase that they will really feel in their household budget," he added.

Mikić said that the state must set priorities.

"If there are funds for the growth of state administration and other expenditures, then there must be money for the generations that built Montenegro. Pensions must be adjusted to the real cost of living, and not just through administrative formulas that do not take into account prices in supermarkets and pharmacies. The July six cents best show how Milojko Spajić's government continues to humiliate pensioners. From the new session, we will continue to fight for higher pensions," he concluded.
