The NATO Membership Council proposed to the Government that the national coordinator for NATO, Nebojša Kaluđerović, be relieved of his duties due to his departure for a new position, and that the former head of the Mission of Montenegro to the Alliance, Vesko Garčević, be appointed as the new coordinator.
As announced by the Government, the Council today considered the results achieved in the public dialogue on Montenegro's membership in NATO in the past period, as well as the mechanisms for further improving the communication of this foreign policy priority during the next year.
"At the session, the commitment of the Government and all institutions was highlighted to, within the framework of intensified and focused talks with NATO, continue with the responsible realization of all activities in the process of Euro-Atlantic integration and further implementation of reforms in key areas - the rule of law, reforms of the defense and security sector and strengthening of support for membership in NATO, so that by the end of 2015 at the latest, Montenegro will receive an invitation to become the next, 29th member of the Alliance," the announcement states.
The Council, as stated, positively evaluated the previous activities in terms of public dialogue and creation of an environment in which it was possible to exchange arguments about Montenegro's membership in NATO.
"Potential mechanisms for the continuation of those activities were considered, with cooperation with all segments of society," the statement added.
