From May 22, Montenegro will have a new party on the political scene - the Montenegrin Democratic Union (CDU), former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador of Montenegro in Washington Miodrag Vlahović confirmed to "Vijesta".
Vlahović, who is a candidate for the president of that party, said that the CDU will be a Montenegrin civil party, a political center and that it will advocate for entry into NATO and the EU and the advancement of the national and state interests of Montenegro as a multi-ethnic community. He said that the founding congress will be held on May 22 in Podgorica.
"In the next few days, we will publish the 'Manifesto of Montenegrin Democrats', which will present the political philosophy of the future party, the party symbol and its program foundations," said Vlahović for "Vijesti".
He said that the decision to form the CDU was made after several months of preparations, with the active participation of about sixty eminent Montenegrin intellectuals, lawyers, engineers, doctors and former political activists, as well as a significant number of young people. Vlahović also stated that after taking office in the party, he will no longer hold office in MVPEI.
It is planned that Vlahović will be ambassador to the Republic of South Africa on a non-resident basis.
The establishment of a new party became certain in mid-December last year, when about twenty past and present members of LP met at a meeting in the hotel "The Queen of Montenegro".
Vlahović did not attend the meeting, but addressed the gathering in a letter. The meeting was attended by the former leader of LP Miodrag Živković, as well as Dragan - Purko Ivančević, president of the Helsinki Committee in Montenegro Slobodan Franović, dean of the Faculty of Business and Tourism Rade Ratković, Dragutin-Dado Martinović, former director general of RTCG Velibor Čović, Stanka Vučinić, actor Nikola Perišić, lawyer Predrag Milašević, Đuro Vučinić, Radomir-Rajko Čavor.
One of the reasons for the gathering was dissatisfaction within the ranks of the LP, after the re-election of Andrija Popović as president, which culminated in failure in the local elections.
As the News reported, the word "union" in the party's name means that the CDU is not a faction of any of the earlier parties.
