The NGO Action for Human Rights (HRA) appealed, in the tone of last night's attempt to intimidate Jevrem Brković, to the competent authorities in Montenegro to more actively "protect freedom of expression".
"Last night's explosion in front of the door of the apartment of writer Jevrem Brković may mean a terrifying message for this writer who was attacked by masked attackers with metal rods in 2006 in Podgorica, also in front of the building where he lives, immediately after he published a novel in which he described the relationships between the ruling circle and the mafia in Montenegro.
During that attack, Srđan Vojičić, the driver of Jevrem Brković, was killed. That attack and murder have not been solved to this day, nor has anyone been charged for it. The NGO Action for Human Rights appeals to the competent state authorities to fully shed light on the attack on Brković and Vojičić in 2006 and the background of that attack, as well as last night's explosion in front of Brković's door.
Violence against people due to the expression of a different opinion must be seriously and convincingly suppressed and punished in a country such as Montenegro, which considers itself democratic, which is obliged to actively protect freedom of expression based on its membership in the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the OSCE. and which aspires to membership in the European Union," the announcement reads.
Bosniak party: This is the third attack on freedom of thought and speech in Montenegro
The Bosniak party condemned the attack on the apartment of Montenegrin writer Jevrem Brković, which happened last night around 21.20:XNUMX p.m.
"The Bosniak party strongly condemns the attack on the apartment of the famous writer Jevrem Brković. We believe that this is another in a series of attacks on the great poet, who has been recognized in his public engagement for more than two decades as a fighter for democracy, freedom of expression and an anti-war activist during the time of aggression to Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the last month, after the attack on the newsroom of ND Vijesti, journalist Lidija Nikčević, this is the third attack on freedom of thought and speech in Montenegro. Such incidents represent an attack on the foundations of democracy, on freedom of speech and expression, but they are also a brake on Montenegro's path to Euro-Atlantic integration.
The Bosniak party asks the competent authorities to urgently shed light on this, as well as all previous cases, so that the perpetrators of these crimes will be brought to justice," concludes the statement of the Bosniak party.
