The second round of negotiations between the Montenegrin and Italian Ministries of Justice on the signing of two bilateral agreements in the field of extradition and criminal legislation will take place in September this year, the Montenegrin Ministry of Justice announced after the meeting of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Duško Marković with the Italian Ambassador to Montenegro, Serđo Barbanti.

The formalization of cooperation with the Italian judiciary was planned in the Strategy and Action Plan for the fight against corruption from 2007, which has been prolonged for years because officially the experts of the two countries have not fully agreed on the models by which this cooperation would work.

In the statement, signed by the spokesperson of the ministry, Ana Radusinović, it is recalled that the negotiations, during Marković's mandate, began with his visit to Italy. It is emphasized that the agreements would facilitate the application of multilateral agreements of the Council of Europe and strengthen the cooperation between the two countries at the operational level as well.

It is added that the interlocutors agreed in principle on the visit of the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Italy for the fall of this year.

"With its results, successful regional cooperation and continuous efforts of its institutions to implement European standards, Montenegro deserved to open membership negotiations with the EU," the announcement states.

The interlocutors exchanged opinions on further activities of Montenegro in the coming period regarding the realization of Montenegrin foreign policy and national priorities and agreed that one of the more successful mechanisms of any progress of a country is successful regional and international cooperation.

Along these lines, it was pointed out that Montenegro successfully cooperates with the states of the region and EU members, especially in terms of judicial and police cooperation, which is key to the results of the negotiations for Chapters 23 and 24, but also for all phases of the integration process.
