Croatian member of the European Parliament (EP) Tonino Picula has been appointed EP rapporteur for Montenegro.
Picula, as announced from his office, thanked his colleagues who showed their trust in him by appointing him as rapporteur for Montenegro.
"Of all the candidate countries, Montenegro has advanced the farthest in negotiations with the European Union (EU), and as EP rapporteur for Montenegro, I will advocate for strengthening its ties with the Union, so that it can become a full member as soon as possible," said Picula.
As he stated, it is of strategic interest for Croatia to have other members of the Union on all its borders.
"Our experience and know-how, which we gained as the last country to become a member of the EU, should be transferred to the countries in the region, and I believe that in Podgorica we will have good partners on their way to the Union", Picula pointed out today during the appointment .
He emphasized that the confirmation of Josep Borrell as a candidate for the commissioner of the European Commission for Foreign Affairs, who put the countries of the Western Balkans in the priorities of his mandate, additionally strengthens their European perspective.
Montenegro has been a candidate for EU accession since 2010, and accession negotiations began in June 2012.
