The centuries-old intertwining of major global powers in the Balkans threatens to endanger the countries in the Balkans, said the president of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Milo Đukanović at the opening of the Conference "Ahead of the EU Summit - Western Balkans", organized by the DPS together with the Party of European Socialists (PES).
"You are all familiar with the scenario that was being prepared for Montenegro precisely from those centers supported by internal anti-state elements, who were against Montenegrin statehood. In addition, we managed to form a stable government," said Đukanović and added that, at the time when that meeting was scheduled, he did not even think that he would be welcomed as a candidate for the president of the country.
"But whoever has been involved in politics for as long as I have, must count on unpredictable circumstances," he said.
Đukanović also said that he is convinced that the European Union (EU) must not allow itself to repeat the mistakes of the past, as well as that it must strive more strongly to solve problems beyond its borders.
The president of PES, Sergej Stanishev, said that it was wrong that the president of the European Commission (EC), Jean-Claude Juncker, said at the beginning of his mandate that there would be no EU enlargement during his term.
"Without the Balkans, the enlargement process is not complete. Joining the EU is not just a formal process, but a difficult process that requires mutual efforts and concrete solutions," Stanishev said.
