Husović: I expect a dialogue and a contract between the state and the church

"If we forbid one nation to participate in making a decision on an issue, I'm afraid that it would lead to something that, I assume, is not the goal of anyone," said the leader of the Bosniak Party.

The President of the Bosniak Party (BS) Rafet Husović said that he expects that, after the Christmas holidays, the Government and the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) will start a dialogue on the Draft Law on Freedom of Religion, which should result in the signing of a fundamental contract between the state and the SPC.

In an interview with the MINA agency, Husović, commenting on the current political situation, said that during 2016, before and after the elections, there were attempts to return Montenegro to some "dark times".

"In the previous days, we had the culmination of everything that was started then, which was caused by certain political forces, with the aim of causing incidents and conflicts, which we managed to avoid even in much more difficult times, and all this in order to achieve goals that are in conflict with the aspirations of all progressive strength in Montenegro towards progress and Euro-Atlantic values", Husović said.

As he added, it is obvious that these forces do not have the power to significantly influence the stability of Montenegro.

Husović said that the willingness and reaction of the state to prevent all actions that could lead to the epilogue that part of the opposition is aiming for is commendable.

"If we ignore the latest events, I believe that the political situation is very stable, the Government and other institutions carry out their work smoothly. I don't see major problems, if we ignore the political assessments coming from the opposition about the political crisis. I think there is no crisis, everyone fulfills their obligations regularly," Husović said.

Speaking about the Draft Law on Freedom of Religion that was passed by the Government, and which caused numerous reactions in the public, Husović reminded that the law from 1977, that is, from the time of communism, is in force.

He believes that a legal solution is needed that is in line with European legislation.

"I am aware that this issue causes a lot of controversy in the public, but I believe that a dialogue between religious communities and political entities with law makers is necessary. It is important that the voice and position of everyone affected by this law be heard. Therefore, Muslims, Orthodox, Catholics and other religious communities," Husović assessed.

He said that Montenegro is a civil state, where everyone has equal rights.

"If we forbid one nation from participating in making a decision on an issue, I'm afraid that it would lead to something that, I assume, is not the goal of anyone," said the BS leader.

Husović said that he expects that after the Christmas holidays, everything that was possibly missed in that law will be the subject of discussions between the Government and the SOC, which should result in the signing of a fundamental contract between the state and the SOC.
