To stay in power, the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) expected the support of some international addresses, and probably pressure on the URA Civic Movement to join the coalition, said Stevo Muk, president of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Alternatives (IA).
Two days ago, the DPS expressed the expectation that the international community would not interfere in the formation of a new government in Montenegro, stating that it is ready for post-election talks with potential partners with whom it has constituted a parliamentary majority so far.
"We expect the international community to remain consistent, as it remained silent for eight months on the unprecedented interference of another state in our elections and on the unprecedented influence of the church on politics, to leave this decision to Montenegrin political subjects. "Montenegro will not allow its history to repeat itself after a century, in which it was once used as a currency for undermining key countries and their interests in the Balkans," the statement of the ruling party states.
Diplomats in Podgorica and Brussels did not react on this occasion. They previously praised the fact that the election day passed in a peaceful atmosphere and expressed the expectation that a new government will soon be formed that will continue the current state course.
Commenting on the criticism from the official party address of Milo Đukanović, Stevo Muk told "Vijesti" that DPS was shocked not only by the election defeat, but also by the fact that the election result was recognized by the international community.
"This speaks not only of the post-election narrowed consciousness of the DPS leadership, but also of the expectation that they will remain in power regardless of the election result. In order to stay in power, they expected the support of some international addresses, and probably pressure on the URU to enter into a coalition with the DPS. The impression is that the international community behaves fairly and neutrally and does not think of meddling in post-election events," said the interlocutor.
The IA activist reminds that the current government has too often accused a number of foreign countries of interfering in internal relations, and now indirectly criticizes the international community for not interfering in favor of the DPS after the election.
"The three political lists that won the elections broke the arguments of the DPS in front of the EU and NATO, by quickly promoting the four principles of the new government, by confirming the further fulfillment of international obligations and emphasizing EU membership as a priority of the new government. "I would not be surprised if the DPS and Đukanović, as president, continue to delay the process of forming a new government and try to aggressively lobby key EU and NATO countries for the concept of a minority government to the taste of the DPS, against the backdrop of declarative recognitions," says Muk.
Raonic: A wise foreign policy is the result of the government's longevity, so the reaction is surprising
The executive director of the Civic Alliance, Boris Raonic, believes that the message from the DPS is a signal that can certainly be interpreted as a sign that certain scenarios that exist will not receive the support of the international community.
A reminder that all the positive developments in Montenegro since 1990 are the result of the presence of the international community, and one of the key reasons for the longevity of the DPS, as he states, is wise communication with the international community.
"That's why such a nervous attitude towards the international community is surprising, especially since there were those who supported them in the events of the last few days. As a country halfway through the transition, in a region that lacks stability, the role of the international community is crucial and it is the guarantor of further democratic processes," Raonic told "Vijesti".
